Keep Calm and Carry On

Life gets hectic at times.

The thing to remember is this is a season.

Seasons come and go.

Does anyone else want to shout “thank you Jesus!” with me?

I am in one of the toughest seasons of my life right now as a mom: teenage angst season.

In teen angst season the world revolves around the teens in your house. Nothing a parent says or does is right. Rudeness can come in like El Nino and linger. The average tear fall is high, around a liter a day. Any little thing can create gale force mood swings and lay waste to the peaceful landscape of my home. Add “first love” into the mix and the tears can pour so fast I wish God had given me carpentry skills, because I need an Ark.

I have two girls, 14 and 16.

Teenage Angst Season is in full swing.

In Ecclesiastes there is a scripture written by Solomon and immortalized by The Byrds.

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”

Sometimes we do not think about life in seasons.

Some of us, the ones raised with soap opera like mentalities, think “these are the days of our lives” and “as the world turns” we get drama, drama, drama. One thing is true. There is only “one life to live”, but seasons come and go.

There are seasons of peace.

There are times of preparation.

I live in Southeast Texas, less than 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and hurricanes are a real possibility From June to September. The last few big storms we had were late in the season. Before then, we had a beautiful summer. We know hurricane season comes around every year so we prepare for it. We are not caught off guard. We have batteries, water, non-perishables, etc.

Our lives are like this too: seasons come and go, but we need to be prepared for what is coming.

There are two things to remember when preparing to weather any season of life.

1) Prayer – Quiet time with God prepares us like nothing else can.

2) Patience- This too shall pass. As the Brit’s said during WWII, “Keep calm and carry on!”
